Retractable leashes are popular primarily because they aren’t as confining as regular leashes, allowing dogs more freedom to sniff and poke around on walks. But unfortunately, there are many disadvantages when using retractable leashes:
- It becomes a disaster to control a situation if your dog suddenly comes face to face with a situation he is not comfortable with. The dog is pulling on the leash while you are struggling to retract the leash which is impossible when the dog is pulling!
- Retractable leahes make it difficult to train loose leash walking as there is always a slight tension. This may confuse the dog or cause the dog to have a negative association as he learns the only way forward is by pulling forward.
- They can be dangerous to the handlers and dogs. Rope burns, serious cuts or even broken fingers occurs when you try to grab the lead in a panic. The dog may get injured if the lead gets entangled in him.
- Retractable leashes are bulky and can be easily pulled out of the hand of the handler especially if you have a big dog.
- Dropping the handle may startle the dog and in a moment of panic, he may take off and run away. The bulky handle is on the ground, making rattling noise as the dog runs, causing further panic!
Hence, instead of using retractable leashes, use a long line instead. It is safer and gives the dog more freedom without the feeling of a tensed leash.
